And the West is History

100 years ago: “Christmas goods are being picked up rapidly, and those who are putting off their shopping to the last will have little to choose from.”

75 years ago: “An early Christmas vacation for pupils and teachers in the Durango public schools will begin Dec. 20 and will be concluded on Dec. 30. It will be the first time in years that the schools’ Christmas holidays will end before New Year’s. New Year’s Day will be a lone holiday in the school calendar.”

50 years ago: “A mixture of rain and snow deposited .76 inch of moisture on Durango as the temperature rose only three degrees from an early morning low of 32 degrees. ... There was welcome new snow at Purgatory, and the call has gone out for packers to report Saturday morning to pack the slopes.”

25 years ago: “Fort Lewis College will spend about $2.4 million to upgrade its water and electrical systems, beginning in February, and it has plans for new roads, sidewalks and other campus improvements in 1991.”
