Freedom of the press is so essential in any democracy, so important it was enshrined as part of the first amendment to the Constitution. We need to support institutions dedicated to the free press and the wide dissemination of relevant information that make our democracy possible.
The Durango Herald continues to publish in our communities here in the Four Corners and is doing a public service we all need. We need curated information about what is happening, locally in particular. We can rely on the Herald to be that source!
Newspapers in the digital age are not profitable endeavors. Witness all of the newspapers that have ceased to publish real papers, ones we can actually have a secondary use for. Yet the Herald is still here.
I am grateful that the Ballantine family continues to publish the Herald. But we should have no illusions that we could continue to include one in our everyday routine unless we all have some skin in the game.
The skin is a subscription.
If you value locally a place where the free exchange of ideas can happen, where we all can see what is said, consider subscribing to the Herald as an act of good citizenship.
Support of the free press is the most important thing we can do as Americans.
