And the West is History: Fishing on the Animas – ca. 1899

The Animas River was a good river for fishing by Indigenous people and later white settlers in the 1870s. Here, two unnamed youths are fishing near the Animas’ confluence with Junction Creek at the turn of the 20th century. Look closely at the boy closest to the camera. He has a nice stringer of fish across his right leg. Angling is still a popular activity on the river, with four miles south of the DoubleTree Hotel recognized by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife as a “Gold Medal Stream.” – Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum.org (Catalog Number: 84.01.1.2 from the La Plata County Historical Society Photo Collections)
