July 11, 2-3 p.m.: Summer Teen Zone: Creative Writing Workshop. In this workshop, Myles Bullen works with teens to help them find their voices and express themselves creatively with words, whether those take the form of poems, songs, raps or stories – real or imagined. With undeniable genuineness, Myles leads by example, modeling vulnerability, as he guides participants through their creative process. For ages 13-17.

July 11, 4-5:30 p.m.: Crafternoons (for adults!). Crafting isn’t just fun, it’s fundamental for mental health, relaxation and happiness. Explore our craft supplies each month. Follow a suggested project or free play and create your own masterpiece. This space is reserved for adults (17+) This month: Cyanotype Prints.

July 12, 2-3 p.m.: Adventures in Geocach Hunting. Searching for a geocache is a lot like treasure hunting. Learn cache-finding basics, before setting out with a map and clues to find special adventure caches around the library.

Babies/toddlers

Storytime Explorers: Thursdays, 11 a.m.-noon. Storytime and craft, and then stay after to play and meet other families. All ages welcome. This program will be held in the library park, weather permitting.

Kids

Wild Wednesdays, 11 a.m.-noon. Kids, families and caregivers, join us for special STEAM activities each week. NOTE: Open to all, but younger children will need assistance with the projects. This is a drop-in event and participants may come and go as they please – no registration required. Interested teens are also welcome.

Safari Fridays, 11 a.m.-noon. Weekly animal visits for all ages. July 5: No event; July 12: Wolfwood (rescheduled); July 19: Read to a Dog with the La Plata County Humane Society; July 26: Summer Learning Final Party and Agility Dog Demo.

Teens

Teen Tabletop Club: Tuesdays, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Weekly tabletop gaming session. Magic, D&D, Cthulhu and more – you choose the adventure.

Mountaintop Movement Fitness Classes

These classes are hosted by local fitness instructors Brian and Tammy Williams. Follow them on the Mountaintop Movement Facebook page for more information. Full Body Fit Class: Monday-Thursday, 8:15-8:50 a.m.: Work out using your own body weight or light hand weights to work all the body parts. The free classes are always similar in style but always different moves to keep it fun and fresh. You’ll need a yoga mat and light hand weights. If you don’t have them, there are extras that can be used. All ages and fitness levels are welcome.

Friends of the Library Shed Book Sale

Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m.: Stop by the shed in the library parking lot for our weekly popup book sale.

Community Knitting and Crochet Group

Sundays, 2-4 p.m.: All are welcome. Whether you have been knitting and/or crocheting for years or you would like to learn, we are happy to have you and will do our best to help you get started.

Program calendar

July 1, 6-8 p.m.: Typeset Writer’s Group. No rules, just writing. Each month, a member of the group will bring an article for discussion. Participants also have the option to bring two pages of their own writing to read aloud, but it’s not required. If you’d like to read your own writing, bring it in manuscript format.

July 9, noon: Delayed library opening because of monthly staff meeting.

July 10, 2-3:30 p.m.: BookMarks Book Club. Open to all adults in the Pine River Valley. The library provides the books, the discussion leader and a place to meet each month Stop by the front desk to check out your copy of this month’s title: “Demon Copperhead,” by Barbara Kingsolver.

July 10, 6-7:30 p.m.: Food Preservation 101. Are you interested in extending the shelf life of your perishable food, but uncertain which preservation technique to use? This 90-minute presentation will help you understand the economic and nutritional pros and cons of six food-preservation techniques. The evening will wrap up with tips and tricks for dehydrating bountiful produce. Preregistration required. Stop by the library or call 884-2222, ext. 1, to register.

July 11, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.: Learn Over Lunch: European Travelogs. RSVP by calling the library at 884-2222, ext. 1, or the Senior Center at 884-5415. Also RSVP by stopping by both the library or Senior Center. RSVP by the Monday before each presentation. The July 6 topic will be “European Travelogs” with Brenda Marshall and Darcy Poletti. Take a trip to the cobblestoned streets and ancient castles of northern Portugal and travel to the crystal clear waters of Sicily.

July 11, 3-5 p.m.: Community Music Makers. Local musicians of all abilities and instruments (including voice) are welcome every second Thursday of the month. We share our songs and love of music of all kinds. Bring your instrument and a few copies of what you want to play and share. We usually go around the circle and each person shares a song with others joining in. Do not be intimidated: We truly are of all ability levels.

July 11, 6-7 p.m.: Genealogy 101. Every family is different, and at the same time (if you go back far enough) we are all one family. Learn the tools you need to access your own family history. We will discuss from a beginner level and up how to use existing online and library resources to get started creating a family tree and learning more about your relatives, and review the basics of formal genealogical research. July 12 and 25, 4-5:30 p.m.: Beginning Mahjong Meetup. Mahjong is a tile-based table-top game developed in 19th century China. Similar to the Western card game rummy, mahjong is a game of skill, strategy and luck. It is entertaining to play and, like dominoes, is relatively easy to learn. All are welcome.

July 12 and 19, 6-11 p.m.: 4 Corners Tabletop Night. 4 Corners Tabletop Night is a place for tabletop gamers in the Four Corners to meet up and get their miniatures to the table. We play a variety of games and welcome players of all skill levels. We strongly encourage joining our Discord Server for event information, hobby inspiration and tabletop chat. Join us at the library every second and third Friday of the month. July 16, 1-2:30 p.m.: Death Café. A time and place where people come to share food, drink tea or coffee, and discuss death openly and honestly. The aim is to increase awareness about death in order to help people make the most of their (finite) lives.

July 17, noon-1 p.m.: Cookbook Club. Each month, we gather together and share a potluck of recipes from a chosen cookbook, chef or cuisine. Stop by the library and pick up a copy of that month’s cookbook and then call or email Darcy to RSVP and let the library know what recipe you’ll be making for the potluck (884-2222, ext. 522, darcy@prlibrary.org). In July, we’ll be cooking recipes from our featured chef Jaimie Oliver.

July 17, 6:15 p.m.: Library Board Meeting. Regular monthly meeting of the library’s Board of Trustees.

July 19, sunset: Outdoor Movie: “Wonka.” A free outdoor showing of “Wonka.“ The movie will start around sunset. Bring your own blanket or chair and enjoy a night at the movies under the stars. Come around 8 p.m. for pre-movie s’mores!

July 24, 6-7:30 p.m.: Intro to Archaeology. Join San Juan Basin Archaeological Society for a foray into the world of archaeology. Learn about the science of archaeology – what it is and what it is not (e.g., “Tomb Raider” and “Indiana Jones”). The presentation will also include information about local publicly accessible sites. Plus, there will be a demonstration of paleo technology outside (twine making, projectile points, atlatl spear throw, making fire, etc.).

July 25, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Spanish Conversation Hour. Practice your Spanish in an informal setting. All ages and language levels welcome.

July 26, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Summer Learning Final Party and Agility Dog Demo. Agility is one of the fastest-growing dog sports in the country – and for good reason. It’s incredible exercise for both you and your dog, and it forges an even deeper relationship between you. Plus, it’s exhilarating to watch as your dog nimbly and quickly runs through tunnels, weaves around poles and leaps over jumps. For our Summer Learning Final Party, we have a special event with members of the local Durango Agility Dogs Club. The group will set out a few pieces of equipment to show everyone some of their dog’s skills. There will be a brief discussion about the sport, including a few tips on things you can do at home to get started. Plus, there will be free cake for everyone to celebrate the end of our Summer Learning adventures and the 20th birthday of our library building.

July 26, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Pine River Senior Center Outreach. Books and DVDs available for check out, delivered to the Senior Center with an extended loan period (four weeks, rather than the standard one to three weeks) each month.

Check Out State Parks Program. Fort Lewis and Sunnyside Libraries have “Check Out State Parks” backpacks available for check out. Each pack includes a pass for free entry to Colorado state parks, binoculars, wildlife viewing guides and park information. The pack can be checked out on an adult library card for one week.
