Believe it or not, “South Park” was and still is my “go to” for some moral issues. And if you think it’s a moral sewer, it’s definitely one I’m proud to swim in. They did a spectacular job explaining the caveats of Mormonism and did a great job in the episode “Night of the Living Homeless,” which is the subject of this opinion post.
In this episode, homeless people begin swarming into the town of South Park. Kyle feels bad for the homeless and gives $20 to a man, who then promptly asks for more. The number of homeless immediately grows dramatically, and they wander everywhere asking for change in a zombie-like manner.
The point is this – we’re encouraging more homeless people to come to Durango. Our town is small and not fit for this. We do not have the resources of a major metropolitan area – they’re better off in a big city. And if they’re going to have to pack up every day, what’s the point? This will drive tourism away.
Heck, we’ve already got wildfires and the train either becoming diesel or grinding to a halt to deal with. If they’re going to stay here, please assign them to do trail maintenance or more trash pickup.
Or like in “South Park,” we can advertise California as “super cool to the homeless” by singing a collab version of 2Pac and Dre’s “California Love,” and lead them there.
