Presented by the League of Women Voters of La Plata County, Great Decisions is an annual nonpartisan briefing book with accompanying discussion programs that cover eight foreign policy topics. May 8, 4-5:30 p.m.: Crafternoons: DIY Gift Bags. Make a gift or tote bag made of laminated prints. We will provide some print options, or bring your own images to laminate. For adults only.
May 8, 6-7:30 p.m.: A Class for the Casual Cyclist. Learn tips on how to safely and effectively get around town on a bicycle. This class will cover Colorado bicycle laws, bicycle etiquette and sharing roads with multiple road users. Plus how to best carry your gear, bike locks and more. The final part of the class will be a short bike maintenance workshop covering the basics. With local nonprofit Bike Durango.

May 22, Author Event: Hampton Sides, “The Wide Wide Sea.” Hampton Sides is the author of The New York Times bestselling histories “On Desperate Ground,” “In the Kingdom of Ice,” “Hellhound on his Trail,” “Blood and Thunder” and “Ghost Soldiers,” which won the PEN USA Award for Nonfiction. His newest book, “The Wide Wide Sea,” is an account of the voyage of the Age of Exploration, which culminated in Captain James Cook’s death in Hawaii. Hosted by Maria’s Bookshop at the library.

Full Body Fit Class: Monday-Thursday, 8:15-9 a.m. Work out using your own body weight or light hand weights to work all body parts. The free classes are always similar in style but use different moves to keep it fun and fresh. You’ll need a yoga mat and light hand weights. If you don’t have them, there are extras that can be used. All ages and fitness levels are welcome.
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:15-10:15 a.m. In this informal, free meetup, we create awareness and harmony between the mind and body that allows us to remove stress and anxiety. We use our breath to move deeper into our body while warming, lengthening and strengthening our muscles. All you need is a yoga mat and a water bottle. Some yoga tools such as blocks, a blanket and a strap are encouraged.

May 6, 4-5 p.m.: Healthy Soil = Healthy Plant. Ready to plant seeds in a newly cleared garden bed and need to know how to start? We will go over bed preparation, soil health, fertilizing basics for gardening, and how to deal with pests. Meet outside in the garden near the shed with the living roof to learn from a master gardener from Pine River Garden Club.

Bring your instrument and a few copies of what you want to play and share. We usually go around the circle and each person shares a song with others joining in. May 9, 1:30-3:30 p.m.: Dancing Spirit Art Class: Clay Critters: Sculpting Fun Creatures. Learn how to use handbuilding techniques to form and shape animals, fantasy creatures and characters that reflect your personal style. From realistic creatures to whimsical beings, this class will guide you through the steps of creating sculptures using simple tools and techniques. Space is limited to 12 participants, ensuring a personalized, hands-on experience, so don’t miss out on the fun. May 9 and 23, 4-5:30 p.m.: Beginning Mahjong Meetup. Mahjong is a tile-based table-top game developed in 19th century China. Similar to the Western card game rummy, mahjong is a game of skill, strategy and luck. It is entertaining to play and, like dominoes, is relatively easy to learn. All are welcome.

A commercial airliner in flight from Hawaii to San Francisco develops engine trouble and lays bare the problems of all people on board. An all-star cast appears in what’s considered the first of the “disaster films.” We can thank this movie for the dozens of similar offerings that would take over movie houses in the 1970s.

Two-day training course trains teens (12-18 years old) on basic child care, nutrition and an introductory understanding of early learning and social/emotional literacy skills. The course includes integrated 21st century Future Ready skills such as community leadership, business marketing, entrepreneurship and professionalism. The training also features a full-day basic lifesaving course including CPR/First Aid training, allowing teens to receive official CPR/First Aid cards from the American Heart Association. All teens who participate in the class may become a part of the library’s babysitter referral list, which helps match local teens with Bayfield-area families looking for child care. Participants must commit to the full two-day course. If any spots in the course remain open, alumni students can re-cert their CPR/First Aid certifications. Course fee is $30 and must be paid before the class. The cost for recertification is $20. Register by May 21. A minimum of 10 participants is needed for this class to run. Thursdays at 1 p.m.: Knitters Group. Join our lovely group of knitters for a beverage and a chat in the Community Room.
Fridays at 9 a.m.: Community Coffee and Donuts. An opportunity to stay informed about all the resources available at the library.
Fridays at 1 p.m.: IDEA LAB Classes. Model Rocket Building this month.
