Whether I agree with a Herald editorial or not, there is generally a thoughtful basis for the writer’s point of view. However, the editorial on the new Colorado gun laws (Herald, Apr. 16) missed that mark by a mile.
First off, the governor signed the bill behind closed doors as if he was ashamed of it. Our local Democrat house representative voted against the bill, as did several other Western Slope Democrats.
The writer failed to mention that with the new requirements for certifications and classes, that there could be an additional cost of as much as $300 per purchase. The writer would have you believe that the law only covers the sales of so-called “assault rifles.”
Actually, it covers a host of hunting rifles, shot guns and the majority of pistols on the market. In addition to the flagrant disregard for the Second Amendment, this bill is actually aimed at putting local gun stores out of business.
It’s doubtful if this editorial had any meaningful effect on the criminal or deranged shooters who perpetrate these horrendous crimes.
