Our view: Become Fire-Wise on Tuesday

While there was snow at the higher elevations at the end of the week, La Plata County was largely dry, as it was most of this winter. Lower temperatures with recent moisture momentarily darkened roads and hillsides but wasn’t measurable.

Thinking about summertime fire danger? We’re glad La Plata County Office of Emergency Management is. We all should be.

Tuesday the 22nd, a free Community Wildfire Preparedness Workshop is being held at the La Plata County Fairgrounds where there will be the opportunity for businesses, nonprofits and residents to learn the techniques to defend rural or almost rural homes and businesses.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., it’s a stop-in environment where those experienced in fire-defensive strategies will be available. A panel discussion will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

As the workshop flyer says: “Emergency preparedness is no joke.” What you learn and apply may save property and structures in not many weeks ahead. Take it in. Learn more at readylaplata.org.
