We are leaders of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango’s ‘Preserve Democracy’ team. We have 30+ members, all deeply disturbed about the destructive actions of the current Republican administration.
Unitarian Universalists believe in the inherent worth of every individual, regardless if they are rich or poor, Democrat or Republican. The actions of the current administration are coming from a variety of directions, and it is hard to keep your eye on all of them.
We are horrified by the incarceration of innocent immigrants in an El Salvadoran prison and alarmed by the dangerous exposure of confidential U.S. government information to foreign adversaries.
We are frightened by the harm that will come to millions of citizens with proposed Medicaid cuts passed to fund tax cuts for the wealthiest. Almost half the benefits of the tax cuts will go to families with incomes above $320,000. Meanwhile, nearly 1 in 4 people in La Plata County depend on Medicaid for access to health care.
Medicaid is an important partner in keeping our local health care system up and running. And what happens if 21 rural hospitals in Colorado, including Mercy and Axis, are closed or severely decrease services due to cuts?
People are suffering already from the betrayal of the freedoms and systems we hold dear. We call for an end to this reckless disregard for our democracy and a return to compassion and standards of decency.
