Setting the facts straight on fluoride

I am grateful for the community members that spoke at the City Hall meeting on January 30th concerning fluoridation of our drinking water in Durango. It is unfortunate that many people including some of our community leaders are misinformed about the origins of sodium fluoride believing it is a beneficial, naturally occurring “element.”

It is very important to understand that this is a falsehood. There is more than one type of fluoride and there is huge difference between calcium fluoride — a naturally occurring element innately present in water and sodium fluoride — an industrial waste byproduct dumped into our drinking water.

Calcium fluoride is natural and allows minimal absorption. Sodium fluoride is not natural, is fully absorbable, cumulative, and destructive to the body and overall health. Studies show numerous adverse effects on multiple body systems by the neurotoxin sodium fluoride. The negative effects include, but are not limited to, a reduction in the children’s I.Q., thyroid disease, calcification of the pineal gland, cancer as well as adverse effects on the brain, liver, kidneys and bones.

Dr. Dean Burk Ph.D worked 34 years at the National Cancer Institute and stated, “In point of fact, fluoride causes more human cancer death, and causes it faster than any other chemical”. Please Google it.

The sodium fluoride added to our drinking water in Durango is an industrial waste byproduct imported from China. Some elected officials at the meeting initially contested these facts and when actual documentation was shown proving the sodium fluoride used in Durango is sourced from China and is indeed a byproduct of industrial waste, there was no attempt to reconcile the misinformation by City Council. This lack of accountability is disheartening. I urge people to do independent research. Vote “for” the removal of fluoride from our water April 4th.
