Student advocacy and the power of youth

I am writing to acknowledge the recent efforts of two dedicated students in the Ignacio School District who have successfully been working toward reintegrating sexual education into their school’s curriculum.

Starting as a Family, Community, Career, Future Leaders of America project and building up to something bigger, their hard work and determination to address this issue has started a new conversation regarding sexual education. As a result, ISD’s school board is considering changing their Sexual Education Policy.

As a member of this community, I understand how vital it is for young people to receive accurate and comprehensive sexual education. In today’s world, where misinformation is easily spread, students need reliable resources to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. Many schools in our area have moved toward providing this essential education, creating a safe space for students to gain the knowledge necessary to navigate relationships, consent and personal safety.

The efforts of these two students highlight the importance of student advocacy and the power of youth in shaping their own education. By taking action, they are not only advocating for their peers but also paving the way for other schools that have similar education policies.
